| Unlike spin rods, fly rods aren't necessarily designed to cast certain sizes of flies. There is no "set" maximum fly size that you can use on any size fly rod, but there is a point in each line weight where the rod will have a very difficult time throwing the fly. It depends on a few things beyond the size of the fly as well such as weight of the fly, bulk of the fly and what type of fly line you are throwing. Heavier bulkier flies are much more difficult to throw and you could have a much bigger, lightweight fly that would be much easier. A heavier weight line than the rod is weighted for will also make it easier to throw bigger flies because it will load the rod a little deeper and have the weight to turn it over. A sinking line also will be easier than a floating line most of the time for the same reason. You kind of have to do a little experimenting with fly sizes, weights and profiles to determine how big you can go. I have thrown 5/0 saltwater baitfish imitations with a 7 weight rod before, but it wasn't easy or pleasant. |
