So what is everyone's favorite lead and tailing fly combo for a 2 nymph rig? I'm new to fly fishing so I can't tell you personally what I like, but based on what I know is living in the waters I'm goin to be fishing i'm thinking a dark bead head gold ribbed hares ear (weighted size 14) with a good old fashioned pheasant tail at the end (also 14, just not weighted). I would do a bigger fly as the lead, but I just got into tying and I don't have any bigger flies yet. I thought about a stonefly, but I don't have the materials to tie them. Anyone have any other suggestions for a good lead fly in a size 12 or 10? (not ready to tackle size 16 flies yet). Finally, I usually use a 2x long nymph hook, for most of my nymphs (damsels and stones being exceptions once I get the materials), what do you folks use and are there a great many advantages to tieing, say, a hares ear in a 3x long as opposed to a 2x?

On rivers, my favorite is a Cripple or a Hopper when appropriate and a #22 WD40 off the eye or the bend.
Stillwater, a piece of regular fluoro (P-Line) folded in half with one side about 12" longer. I put a loop in the bend and attach straight to sinking fly line, or to a furled leader when using floating line.
I put the bigger fly on the longer side. I like bunny streamers or Softhackles and on the shorter, nymphs like #12 Haresear, Renegade, Copper John...ETC.
Have caught allot of doubles.

Depends on what time of year it is and what fish I am fishing for. For steelhead, if I am indicator fishing, I tend to run a bead/sucker spawn as my first fly followed by a nymph pattern I tie. http://flybible.blogspot.com/2010/12/steelhead-nymph.html That is a nymph I like to run and there are instructions on how to tie it. For trout, I have been running midges throughout the winter with either a worm of some sort an egg or hares ear.

Hope this helps,

Patrick

I mix and match my double nymph rigs, but last year my favorite was a brown wooly bugger with a water boatman size 10 behind. I'l also switch the boatmen with a 12 flashback scud or the woolybugger with a streamer. By the way, I'm in the Adirondacks pond trolling for brookies.

I personally like to use either a stonefly or larger general nymph as my first fly then either a pheasant tail or copper john as a my second fly. It is laso not a bad idea to mix up color combos , or species combos either. I have had great luck with a golden stone as my first fly and a small green caddis worm as a second fly on the rivers that I fish in maine. dont be afraid to experiment! its half the fun.
