Hello everyone, just wanted to say hello. I have recently bought a TFO Lefty Signature 9wt rod and a TFO Prism Large Arbor reel (got a great deal from a friend on both and couldent turn it down). I am new to fly casting.
I have a question concerning appropriate backing/fly line/leader/tippet. Most of my fishing is for largemouth, crappie, panfish, carp, trout, etc but i would also like to use this rod and reel for small saltwater game like permit, bonefish, redfish for when i go to the coast and keys in the summer....but i cant figure out what kinds of line i would need!
-Is there such thing as all purpose/all condition fly line?
-If not, can i just get a saltwater line and use it in freshwater when im at the pond or vice versa? would it hurt anything as long as i keep it clean?
-any particular brands that are better than others?
I'm located in NC if that helps answering questions. Also a college student on a budget too!
P.S.-sorry if this topic has been covered before. most of my research was inconclusive
your question is not easy to answer but I hope to be of assistance to you with my input. a 9wt rod is not an allround rod. Of course, you can fish trout with it as well but it is too high class for trout fishing. Second, I know that the reel you purchased can be used in both saltwater and freshwater fishing but I am not sure about the rod, therefore better check with the company or find out online if you can use this rod for saltwater fishing.
Now, backing is not really important while leaders & tippets are easy to find. You will need various leaders and tippets for the fish you mentioned. As for a allround lines, I personally could not find any, however, I would be able to recommend two which served me in all occassions
Wulff Bermuda Traingle tapper 9wt
Rio Grand 9wt
They are both floating lines so I recommend you get an extra spool for you reel and get yourself a sinking line as well
