Hi,

We are 3 French fly anglers and are planning a DIY fly fishing trip. For now, Belize is the place we are thinking of.

We are looking on any info about people fishing there without any guide to know if it's really possible, we are heading there for one month and don't want to get there and have a bad surprise Shocked

If you have any adress or contact for kayak, boat or car rent, let us know Cool

Pescator,

I just got back from a week in Belize. I was on one of the islands, Caye Caulker and there is certainly an opportunity for DIY there. I'm not sure if the same can be said for the main land areas, but Caye Caulker allowed for fishing off the beach areas and many of the mangrove beds around island. I would snorkel through schools of bonefish right off the beach, and baracuda would gather off the docks at night chasing baitfish under the dock lights. I also caught some snapper and other fish on the fly as well off the beach and docks.

I did go out with a guide and he got us to some areas that would not have been open without his boat and knowledge. DIY off of Caye Caulker is decent, but there was occasionally some strong winds off the beach and some of the docks were crowded with boats and other items that can limit casting.

Thanks for the feedback !!

I found some more info and Belize seems to be possible without a guide, even from the mainland where you can rent kayaks and even a boat, negociating with a local Wink

Hi Pescator,

I live in Belize on the island of Ambergris Caye (the largest island) - I'm also the owner of www.BiteMeBelize.com a specialty fishing service directed towards the D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) fishing of Belize. I also own Bad to the Bones Belize fly shop.

It is possible to catch permit and bonefish on a DIY Belize fishing adventure. Some areas are wadeable and hard limestone bottoms. However, most areas are soft silt bottoms with vast feieds of turtle grass (makes for excellent feeding grounds for the permit and bones.

My number and email are located on the website if you have further questions about your DIY fishing trip to Belize. I recommend that you stay in the more Northern Resorts or Villas as teh larger bonefish are out fron up norht where they receive less pressure from guides and locals (who by the way eat them).

Contact me by email and I'll be happy to give you a package of recommended inexpensive Villas and resorts with excellent fishing around them. I can also recommend other island further south in teh country of Belize that has excellent fishing.

I hope this has helped Bro. Hope you have an excellent fishing trip here in Belize.

Big D
