|
|
Hey,
There are a ton of sayings out there ... you know, the ones fishermen have been saying since the beginning of time .... i'd like to hear some that anyone else out there has heard ... and if they have found them to be mostly true or mostly nonsense ...
Referring to Northeast USA Saltwater Wind, "Southwest Fishes The Best, Northeast Fish The Least" .... In my experience very true.
Rerferring to Trout Fishing in Maine, "If the cows in the pastures are laying down, the fishing won't be good. If they are standing up, it will be good." ... Still testing this theory
Anyone else got any? |

"Orange sun in the morning, fisherman's warning"
"Orange sun at night, fisherman's delight"
Has to do with the ocean only, something with tides I think. |

| good one! ... the version of that one that i know well is "red sky in the morning sailors take warning; red sky at night sailors delight" ... i have found this to be mostly true ... when there is a storm approaching (that i know about via satellite weather, which was not available back in the old days) i always notice that many times there is a "red sky" in the morning .. ............. so, i would say in my experience this is ... true. |

the only accurate one I have found that ALWAYS holds true:
A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work. |

| "if the wind is east, the fishing's least" is something i've found to be true for bass- northeast/southeast hasn't been too bad to me, but east- horrible! |

| I have found that fishing in the east is quite extrodinary...so the only saying that I can think of is "If your aunt had balls she'd be your uncle." |

i actually heard a great one this weekend ... in reference to fly fishing for "hard tales" which is a common name for tuna family species bluefin, bonito, albies, etc ... (because they have a very "hard tale") ... here it goes ..
"they don't call them hard tales because of their tales" .... this is ABSOLUTELY true ... anyone who has spent time chasing bonito, albies, bluefin etc... will attest that they are very elusive .. and hard in many ways to catch .. finding them can be difficult .. seeing them can be difficult .. knowing where and what tides can be difficult .. from foot is tough ... getting them to eat your fly is hard .. and they have some crazy way of always staying one step ahead of you ... so i love this saying .. and definately love fly fishing for hard tales ... it is hard but the sense of accomplishment if you can "get it done" .. is awesome! |

"If you don't fish you won't catch."
Unfortunately that just translates to a lot of not catching for me these days.
Also, once had a guide tell me not to eat a banana on a boat. Anyone else hear of that one?
"Think like a fish". I use that one quite a bit when dry fly fishing on streams.
It basically translates to casting to where I think I would hang out if I were a trout. |
