“Dude, Greg just called, he wants to know the number of the guide we used todo the Everglades Experience video. He is planning on coming down next weekand really wants to get into some fish,” Jeremy says over the phone withhis usual enthusiasm he always has for anything fly fishing related. Well Ihave the number as the first contact in my cell, and before you know it,Greg has booked a couple of days. Then the idea hits me. I should probablytake my chances with this Greg character and show him how we do it down herein South Florida. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not by any means saying thatI know the best ways to fly fish all the different spots and species here, butwhat I’m getting at is the fact that with three days to kill, and a thousandcash in your pocket, you can really have the trip of your life. All sortsof ideas then came to mind, Biscayne Bay, East Coast Peacocks, EvergladesSnook, maybe a drive to Flamingo. Oh yeah, that spot in the Bahamas I wasat last week sounds good. A call went out to my friends Capt. Phil andBernard on Grand Bahama Island, and all was set, two days, followed by oneday in the Glades for snook. Greg was guaranteed that even if neither of uscaught a fish, he would still have the trip of a lifetime. So a few days pass, and by this time the whole trip is set in stone, and Greg and I havetalked over the phone for hours on end almost as if we grew up together andwere friends for 30 years. As I packed my bags, my little red cell phonerings. “Hey Dave, Its Marc.” The voice on the other end says. “Sorry forthe late notice, but I was wondering if you would like to meet me in theBahamas tomorrow for a few days of bone fishing?” “I’ll be there!” I say withthe excitement of an 8 year old on Christmas morning. “Ok,” Marc says, “I’ll meet you at the airport, everything is already taken care of.” “No, I don¹tthink you understand, I’m already going to be on the same island on the samedays.” I reply. What are the chances of this happening? The best part ofit is the fact that I consider Marc a great friend met through fly fishing, but also I consider him my mentor. He put a fly rod in my hands for thefirst time, and I will appreciate that forever. Now I have the opportunityto fly fish with a new friend and a person I highly respect and look up to.Yeah, we all caught a bunch of fish, as you will see in the video, but whenyou look at the big picture, without the people we meet and the places wemight be fortunate enough to travel to, all of this fly fishing would get kindof boring.
