The luck being that I have a nice stretch of river in my backyard that I can fish on a regular basis. It’s not the biggest and neither are the trout. But my local go to place provides me with a lot of stress relief after a days work. And what makes it even better is I can hit it on the way home, as it’s right on my route between the two.Another bonus is that it is one of the most heavily stocked waters in the area. That does draw a lot of attention from other fisherman in the months of April and May. But when summer starts to settle in the creek sees a lot less pressure and your often the only one that can be seen on a large stretch of water. By this time the fish are a bit wiser as well. I’m sure as many of you do, I have one particular spot I like to call my own. I’ve always had luck finding fish where a small brook runs into the larger water. It creates a nice cool feeding run for the trout. And this spot is a perfect example of that. It seems like I’m hooking into fish that have set up residency in certain spots as well. I’m almost certain I’m catching and casting to the same fish I’ve caught earlier. Some the wiser and extremely difficult to get a hook set.The hatches aren’t the prolific ones you get on most of the big water. On any given day there is a small amount of a wide variety of insects hatching. It makes finding the right fly pattern a bit more difficult. Some of the fish can’t make up their minds either. I’ll see fish sip a few flies from the surface for a few minutes only to have them go back to sub surface feeding moments later.A lot of days I come home skunked wondering what mistakes I may have made or what the trout were feeding on. But regardless my love of fly fishing makes me thankful to have such a nice place to get away and forget about the frustrations of life.
