Spring break to me is the first Trout of the Season and today was a Brookie day! I caught my first Brookie on my 6’6″, 4 wt. Orvis stream rod and a new size 1 Battenkill reel. The weather was rain and cool but Jeremy and I would not be kept from our fish by weather, but secretly hoped others would. Jeremy took me to a couple of streams, the first of which was no more than 10′ across. This small stream of clear water held some very nice Brookies, not huge but fun. The streams ran fast through the surrounding woods and hard wood ridges. The smell of pine and the budding trees were a welcome sight as were the Trout. I heard you can catch some big Browns there and in surrounding streams so we’ll go again tomorrow. Today we used stone flies, Muddlers, Black Ghost, Wooly Buggers and a nymph or two. The Wooly Buggers and the Black Ghost were the winners for us. It seemed the movement in wing or hackle brought them up. We also used weight to get the flies down split shot or sink putty. The water temp was 39 – 40, about the same as around Augusta, which makes you wonder why they start hitting earlier in the Southern Maine streams.
