I picked up Mr. Fantastic, as they call him in Cumberland farms, around 3:45 for some afternoon fishing. “Meatball what’s happenin?” was the greeting I got. We loaded up my car and headed west towards the only water that was not blown out. This spring has brought a lot of rain raising the water levels to extremes thus making it nearly impossible to fish some rivers. We showed up with no one in sight, the sky had just cleared from a passing shower, and things looked good. We got our gear on laughing at a comment made about the inside of a mini van and walked over to our first pool. Blending in with the background we realized a moped (you know what they say about mopeds!) buried in the trees I guess we were not the only ones here. No worries! I walked down a gravel bank into the water and Jeremy fished across from me on the other side. I cast a black ghost and started to strip in quick 2” strides. With my fly half way in a ripple came from behind and disappeared as fast as it had arrived. Jeremy saw the rings and was immediately ready for action. We kept casting for about 10 min with little action and then it happened. WHAM!! “There he is” my rod quickly bent over and out of the water came what we had been waiting for. The fish jumped half a dozen times with me and Jeremy shouting every time his majesty leaped out of the water. Jeremy was filming while I was battling; both of us were instantly overcome with joy. Just before I got the fish to the net he gave one last pull tail dancing across the surface of the water. It was a magnificent sight. We landed the fish, took a still shot and released the native with no harm. A quick high 5 and we were back on the water stripping away. We fished up and down the river for a couple more hours landing another salmon and capturing some great underwater content yet to be revealed. As we were leaving Jeremy said “there now we have our salmonid fix….how do you say that anyway?”
