Mid June fishing! Maine can surprise you; talk of out west, Alaska etc. makes you want to be elsewhere. Why not try your own back yard. After a long week of work I just did not want to get in the car and go to one of the other hot spots. Two pm I left my office for the long 2 mile ride to a local stream. Bright sun no one on the stream just me and some peace and quiet. Oh and a few Brown’s and my friend Tim. The sun got high I could see fish feeding on nymphs. I put a combo of fly after fly. Dry, wet, emerger you name it. Finally the winning combination. Orvis 3 wt, large arbor reel, braded line 6x tippet tied to a # 20 pheasant tail with a # 18 bead head prince nymph. 2 feet separating the flies with a b size split shot 3 inches off the prince. I could see several fish but the drift was nearly impossible. Slowly I eased into the pool and changed my casting point. I saw the indicator drift over a fish and it disappeared. With a slight roll the fish was on. In seconds all I can see is my backing. Tim said “boy that’s a monster…” (You can decide) 15 minutes of working, praying Tim netted the fish. Thanks Tim! Now I fish a lot all over in fact. Tim said “Why do we go anywhere but the back yard” I think he is correct. We all over look our own back yard, local water; always chasing the greener pastures the bigger fish etc. Sometimes there truly is no place like home. This fish really opened my eyes.. See ya on the river in my back yard!! Joe-m
