Rainbow VideoHi Speed Only

I made a quick call to see what the water level was and got a good report. “They are working on the damn and the water is wicked low.” Just what my flooded ears wanted to hear. I finished up the rest of the day and by making a quick call to a friend of mine looking for a buddy to share the afternoon with. Within 2 hours we were on the river. We waded down to my favorite spot and rigged up with a Copper John and a bead head Hendrickson following behind. My first couple drifts I had a few bumps but no hook ups. My friend Luke was getting worried. “Just keep with it, I know they’re here” And I was right. Not more than two casts later Luke was hooked up and I was saying “I told ya.” We netted the fish and took a few photos. Luke was pumped. It was the first rainbow he had caught in a long time. Next drift I hooked up and the fish came immediately out of the water. “Goodbye.” That’s the way it went for me most of the evening. Fish on fish off. Luke on the other hand could not keep the fish off his line; he landed 4 rainbows and a salmon with the smallest being 18 inches. Towards the end of the night I had a decent fish on and was working it closer to the net. This was going to be the one I finally got and then it happened, my line came shooting towards me and my face went blank. “Damn!” Another fish lost. So, I whipped my line back into the pool and I saw what would be my victory. A red flash ripped in front of me and out of the water he came. “There he is” I was smiling and laughing out loud. The fish brought Luke and me 500 yards down the river where we finally got him in the net and successfully took a photo. What a night! As we were leaving the caddis hatch started coming off and Luke once again, hooked a nice rainbow that jumped multiple times before breaking him off. We ended the night on that note. Both of us were more than satisfied. Our first night of Maine trout fishing was a success and one of my best ever. Thanks Luke.
