I had planned on fishing Saturday in North Western NH with my buddy Adam until things took a turn Thursday night. “Dude, just talked to PeteD he’s slaying monster bows in MA. We’re fishing there sat.” My response was short but to the point “ok.” Adam and I spent the night in NH at my girlfriend’s apt. When we arrived she needed to get out and have a happy hour cocktail so we headed in town. Well happy hour lasted until 12:30am and ended with us breaking into her apt. through a second story window. Long story…Needless to say 4:30am came quite abruptly. I rolled out of bed got Adam off the couch and we were southbound. We met Jeremy and Pete off the exit and followed them to the River. Stepping out of the car we walked down to the river bank to get our first glance at the water. Gin clear would be an under statement, this river was like fishing in the trout pond at L.L Beans. We quickly got our gear on and headed up river to scope things out. Pete decided to take a swim before we got moving; I thought it was foolish with the water being so cold but the rock he tripped on thought otherwise. Jeremy & I were casting a scinthalators which got a few looks but no takes. I was quick to switch to nymphs. A green copper john was my first choice, keep in mind how clear the water is, as I watched the nymph bounce through the water a fish nosed it and backed away. Watching these fish was amazing they were so selective and educated it was a battle getting them to eat. I decided to try a copper, copper john and that was the ticket. A few casts and fish on! The fight was short with a quick run and ended with him breaking me off. We all decided to move up to the beginning of the river and work our way down. I saddled up near some fast water and threw in Johnny boy. Second cast boom! “There he is” the fish instantly jumped and took me up and down the river. Jeremy ran up, netted the fish and took some shots. Life was good I was holding a beautiful healthy fish in crystal clear water surrounded by good company. With the sun shining on my shoulders I meandered down the river in search of more fish. It didn’t take for long copper john to strike again. After landing the fish Adam and I walked to the car for a break. Pete and Jeremy met us there sharing their luck and strategies. After a few laughs and a bite to eat we hopped back in the water for a few more hours. Jeremy and I headed to the famous Y pool and each hooked some beautiful Fish. Jumping and bringing us into our backing was their style. My night ended sooner then Pete and Jeremy’s due to a car ride back to Portland. Adam and I were more than satisfied as we said our goodbyes and headed down the road. Thank you Pete and Jeremy for a great day on the water.
